Money!
The Colon is the national currency; It is recommended to carry US dollars that can be exchanged at banks and hotels.
The exchange rate fluctuates in small increments daily. Bills come in denominations of 1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000 colones and coins are minted in 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, 100 and 500 colon pieces. Canadian Dollars are not usually accepted, but cash and Traveler’s cheques in U.S. dollars can be exchanged at banks and most hotels with the presentation of a valid passport.

Entry/Exit Requirements
It is the sole prerogative of each country or region to determine who is allowed to enter. The following information on entry and exit requirements has been obtained from the Costa Rican authorities. Passport
Canadians must present a valid passport to visit Costa Rica. Before you leave, ask your transportation company about its requirements related to passport validity, which may be more stringent than the country’s entry rules.

Canadians arriving in Costa Rica may remain for up to 90 days without a visa. Those wishing to apply for residency status must contact the Dirección General de Migracion y Extranjería. Overstaying the 90-day period is punishable by a fine and possible deportation. Persons deported from Costa Rica will not be allowed to re-enter the country for 10 years.
Permanent residents of Canada must travel with their Permanent Resident Card and a valid passport from their country of origin.
